Born on November 8, 1982, in Valkeakoski, Finland, Mika Kallio discovered his love for motorcycles at an early age. Inspired by his father, Hannu Kallio, a former top-level rider, Mika began racing on frozen lakes at age 12. By 14, he had transitioned to road racing and won his very first competition, proving his natural talent on asphalt.

These early ice racing days honed his incredible sense of balance and bike control, which later became trademarks of his style in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.

Mika Kallio’s Grand Prix debut came in 2001 in the 125cc World Championship with Ajo Motorsport, where he immediately drew attention with his speed and technical mastery. His stellar performances earned him the "Rookie of the Year" award in 2002.

In 2003, he joined the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team, where he secured multiple podiums. His most dominant years came in 2005 and 2006, when he finished runner-up in the world championship—narrowly missing the title.

In 2007, Kallio moved up to the 250cc class, claiming several race wins and finishing third overall in 2008, his most successful season in that category.

By 2009, he entered the premier class—MotoGP—racing for Pramac Racing Ducati. Competing against some of the world’s best, he earned solid top-10 finishes and was again named Rookie of the Year, this time in the elite class.

Over the years, Mika Kallio became best known for racing under the number 36. While he used other numbers earlier in his career, 36 became his signature on the track—a symbol of his identity and connection to fans around the world.

This number, often displayed on his red-and-white KTM bikes, is now recognized by fans and motorsport followers as part of the Kallio legacy.

Beyond his racing accolades, Kallio is widely respected for his technical insight and development skills. Since 2015, he has served as the lead MotoGP test rider for KTM, playing a crucial role in the development of the KTM RC16.

His feedback has been instrumental in improving aerodynamics, handling, and performance—helping KTM become a fierce competitor in the world of MotoGP.

As of 2025, Kallio continues to work with KTM Racing as their primary test rider. His decades of experience make him an essential part of KTM’s innovation team, continuously refining future MotoGP bikes.

While he no longer races full-time, he occasionally returns as a wildcard rider, showing that his speed and competitiveness remain world-class.
